There is some giant news in the jailbreaking world. If you are Apple, it is news that might have you feeling a little down, a tad disconcerted. If you are a Cydia devotee, you are, perhaps, feeling all warm and fuzzy. OK. Without further ado, here is the aforementioned news: 7 million people downloaded a jailbreaking tool in a matter of a few days. This is a massive number of people; the community of people who know how to jail break their Apple products, and who do, is much larger than it was thought to be.
Jay Freeman sometimes finds himself referred to as “the father of jailbreaking”; he looks the part – it must be said – sporting a long beard and no-fuss glasses, and exuding a vibe of calmness. Also known as Saurik, Freeman started what has evolved into an impressive shop or library of apps that can be found on no electronic shelf in the iTunes Store. These are apps that have been developed outside of the Apple world. And Cydia has recently shown what Freeman has characterized as an “insane” uptick in traffic as those 7 million citizens decided that a jailbroken iPhone was the phone for them.
This article answers 10 questions about the world of jailbreaking. Because when 7 million people do something, it is time for us all to sit up and take notice. Fear not, we assume no knowledge and offer no geek speak.
What is jailbreaking?
Apple puts restrictions in place in all of its devices. This we know. Whether you have the iPhone 3g, the iPhone 4, the iPhone 4s, or the iPhone 5 – you are the proud owner of a restricted device. And, hey, millions of users have no issue with this situation whatsoever. And, as noted above, at least 7 million others do. For those who do want to be limited in the use of their iPhone4, or other Apple device, there is the option of jailbreaking. We can think of jailbreaking as the removal of a kind of wall that Apple has placed around your iPhone’s or iPad’s operating system.
What is Cydia?
We mentioned Cydia above, and gave a shout out of sorts to its iconic founder, Saurik. He founded Cydia because, in simple terms, he wanted his early generation cell phone to do more than it could. Cydia is like the iTunes Store of the alternative world. Site users can buy apps for a reasonable price, or, as in iTunes Store, sometimes download them for free. Jailbroken iPhones and iPads can be used to download these apps, but a regular iPhone or iPad cannot. And there are some Cydia apps that have a hardcore following; apps that their users cannot imagine doing without. Curiosity about Cydia and its offerings lures many Apple customers into the jailbreaking community.
What are some of the best Cydia apps?
We all have apps that are close to our heart. That we can’t imagine life without. There are some Cydia apps that have earned a significant fan base. SBSettings is an iconic one, it offers a drop-down menu that lets you do things like turn WiFi off, turn on BlueTooth, or turn down the screen brightness – all from your screen. No need to go into settings. iFile is a goto app for students and business types alike. iFile lets you organize your files at the screen level. It brings a new level of convenience to the way you store your data.
It’s worth jailbreaking, CNET shows us 10 reasons.
Is jailbreaking illegal?
This is an oft-asked question. Because even if Cydia has a funky app that makes your app icons fall all over your screen, it may not be worth breaking the law to find out how that looks on your iPhone4. We have done some research on this question, as legality can, after all, be a fluid thing. The current rules, just so that we are all aware, are definitely in effect until 2015.
And the verdict is that jailbreaking your iPhone of any generation is perfectly legal. Jailbreaking your iPad? Not so much. It is the Librarian of Congress who has the power to decide the issue, and he decided, no doubt with the help of Congress, that jailbreaking with any smart phone is OK, but jailbreaking a tablet of any kind is not. There you have it.
Is unlocking my iPhone the same as jailbreaking it?
In a word, no. If you unlock your iPhone4, you are freeing it from its prescribed carrier. So, an unlocked iPhone4 lets you choose the carrier you want, but it does not let you download apps from Cydia. If you have no interest in Cydia apps, but you are not happy being told who you have to choose as your carrier, unlocking your iPhone is what you want to do.
What is an untethered jailbreak?
An untethered jailbreak does not require that you reboot your jailbreak after each time you completely turn your iPhone 4soff. A tethered jailbreak requires just that. If you are surfing the net, checking out different spaces where you can download jailbreaking tools, you will see the words “untethered” and “tethered” plastered everywhere. All that you really need to know is that you do not want a tethered jailbreak. How easy it that?
How about IOS 6? What is it?
Apple names its operating systems; the software that runs their various devices, using this format – IOS + a number. You can identify the version of the operating system by its number; for example, the current versions of IOS 6 out there include IOS 6.0.1, IOS 6.0.2, IOS 6.1, and IOS 6.1.1.

This task, the hacking of the software, has become trickier as time has gone on – for even the top-drawer hackers who hack Apple software as a calling. It does seem that with the right hackers, an enormous amount of dedication, and time – the jailbreak tool will come.
Are there some popular jailbreaking tools?
Oh, yeah. Absinthe and RedSnow are the jailbreaking tools that have successfully corralled a significant number of devotees. These tools have been developed by seriously astute hackers and have earned said devotees by proving themselves overtime to be reliable, safe and easy to use.

Does jailbreaking my iPhone4 void my warranty?
Yep. Apple is not a fan of the jailbreak. Not at all. They put security measures in place in an attempt to thwart hackers who are intent on jailbreaking their devices. And they did succeed, with IOS 6, in slowing the hackers down. Way down. One thing that Apple can control is when to pull their warranty and a detected jailbreak meets this threshold.
